About The Piece

ARTIST: TERRY PEIKIN

Terry Pekin is The Steampunk Illuminist. He is a former New York City chef and a graduate of School of Visual Arts for photography. As a child, he had a passion for curious mechanical gadgets. As an artistic adult, he became naturally enchanted by Steampunk, a movement which entered into the mainstream by the mid 1990’s.

Steampunk is art, literature and an expressive vision of a future that never was. It is a tribute to the thinkers and tinkerers of the Victorian age of industrial science and imagination. Tesla, Edison, Jules Verne and H.G.Wells are just a few of those who have inspired the Steampunk movement.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Terry creates his one-of-a-kind, handmade, “Curious Lamps and Jewelry”, using mostly found and repurposed objects dating from the Victorian age to the Art Deco era of the 1920’s. “It’s re-cycling. The antique hunting is part of the fun”, he explains. Vintage and antique watch parts, gears, pressure gauges and often, odd head-scratching objects, combine to form sculptural but useful things that stem from the past but have found new life in the present. It proves that Time Travel is indeed possible!
Terry is pleased to showcase examples of his work at Exquisite Leather & Luggage. Terry can be found at work in his gallery space at, The Market NYC, 159 Bleecker Street, New York City.
