ARTIST STATEMENT:
Growing up as a girl in rural Minnesota, one could guess that farming and animals are
a big part of my life. I take reference for my paintings from animals on my parents’ farm while
incorporating an expressionistic style of painting. The animals have correct anatomy for the
most part but yet draw an energy from the colors I see in them. Artists such as Franz Marc,
Picasso, Gauguin, and Matisse inspired my painting style but more so in the intuition rather
than the exact technique. There is no actual pattern to the way these animals were painted,
but it is all in what I see and feel in that moment.
The subjects of my art as a whole show simple, domesticated animals. You can tell they
are friendly and calm by the posture and positioning of each animal as well as by their
expressions. This is important as a Minnesota artist because it shows the culture and lifestyle
that is not found in the hustle and bustle of a bigger city. As for my take on the subject, they
are a nostalgic and reminiscent of my childhood and simpler times in which we all grow out
of. They are like the blanket or teddy bear you don’t want to leave behind.
